{"id":214,"date":"2020-05-29T12:54:38","date_gmt":"2020-05-29T12:54:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trial.cmrsl.org\/?p=214"},"modified":"2020-05-29T12:55:59","modified_gmt":"2020-05-29T12:55:59","slug":"murdered-gay-man-laid-to-rest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trial.cmrsl.org\/index.php\/2020\/05\/29\/murdered-gay-man-laid-to-rest\/","title":{"rendered":"MURDERED GAY MAN LAID TO REST."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A young gay man who was\nbrutally murdered on the night of 19<sup>th<\/sup> May, 2020 in Likoni, Mombasa\nby as yet unknown persons(s), was buried on Saturday 23<sup>rd<\/sup> May, 2020\nat his rural home in Kwale. His body was discovered in a field on the morning\nof 19<sup>th<\/sup> May, 2020 lying in a pool of blood. He was a social worker\nin one of the LGBTQ organizations in the Mombasa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Violence against Gender\nand Sexual Minorities in Kenya is common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A report by Human Rights\nWatch, published on 28<sup>th<\/sup> September, 2015, reported that 2 gay men\nhad been murdered in the county of Mombasa, one in Bamburi. &nbsp;Five months later, on 28<sup>th<\/sup> March,\n2016, another young man in his early twenties was murdered in a hotel in the\nsame county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The police have never arrested\nany one in connection with any of these murder cases or referred any of them to\ncourt for inquest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sections 162, 163 and 165\nof the Kenyan Penal Code criminalize same sex sexual relations. This sanction,\ncoupled with stigma born of strong cultural and religious sentiments, not only\nfuels crime against Gender and Sexual Minority persons but also discourages reporting\nof these crimes to the police while deterring persons willing to help in\ninvestigations from coming forward. This leaves many crimes committed against Gender\nand Sexual Minority persons to go unreported and unresolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, law enforcement officials though tasked with the\nresponsibility of ensuring the protection of all including gender and sexual\nminorities, are known to discriminate against them.
